The New York Jets need to make important personnel and coaching changes.

The New York Jets have become more soap opera than NFL franchise this offseason and, some could argue, it’s of their own making. It continued to reach regrettably epic proportions with safety Jamal Adams giving a recent interview to the New York Daily News in which he claimed head coach Adam Gase does not have the full respect in the locker room.

Among the claims that Adams, who has demanded a trade this offseason already, asserts is that Gase does not address issues with the team at halftime during games. Instead, the head coach delegates that duty for his assistants to handle.

There are several clear assumptions that the Jets front office needs to make upon reading Adams’ interview. And the first deals with Adams himself: It’s time for him to go. His All-Pro talent is undeniable but he’s become an immense distraction looking for a way out of New York. The Jets need to oblige him.

Trading Jamal Adams, removing Adam Gase is best for the New York Jets.

Jets general manager Joe Douglas needs to trade Adams before the start of the 2020 NFL season. They could surely get a first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and perhaps a franchise-altering wide receiver, something needed more than ever on the current roster. And if the team willing to pay that price isn’t on Adams’ list of preferred teams, so be it.

As for Gase, get him out of New York City and away from the Jets. While Adams may not be totally in the right to air his grievances with his contract and the head coach so publically, that doesn’t make what he’s saying about Gase any less true. And that’s an issue for the franchise.

When New York hired Gase, he was not the best candidate for the job. He has not made any notable improvements with quarterback Sam Darnold and the offense, supposedly his forte, was among the worst in the league in 2019 as well.

While letting Gase go in a shortened offseason may not be the best timing, it’s best for the franchise. Firing Gase could make way for defensive coordinator Gregg Williams to take over as an interim coach and likely hold that job until next offseason. What’s clear is that Adams and Gase being shown the door is long overdue.
