Dallas Cowboys roster: Running Back (3)

The Dallas Cowboys were dealt a blow when fullback Jamize Olawale opted out of the 2020 season. While he doesn’t play a lot on offense, he was a special teams stud and served as their only fullback. His absence opens up a spot for a younger player trying to make a name for himself.

Ezekiel Elliott

There was some concern when Mike McCarthy took over as head coach that there wouldn’t be enough touches for Ezekiel Elliott. Sure, McCarthy has never been a run-first guy but he’s also never had a Zeke on his roster.

Not only that, but Elliott is more than just a guy to run between the tackles, he’s also a very skilled pass rusher. That talent of his was under-utilized in the past and while he might not have 300-rushing attempts the way he has in the past, he could see more passes come his way. In the end, Elliott will get his touches and will do his damage.

Tony Pollard

Another under-utilized option in the Cowboys offense in 2019 was Tony Pollard. Fans were excited about his receiving background as well as the idea of using Pollard and Zeke in the same backfield. Unfortunately, Captain Vanilla himself, Jason Garrett, was never going to let that become a staple.

With him gone, look for offensive coordinator Kellen Moore to finally get Pollard on the field in moments other than garbage time. He won’t need a ton of touches but his home run ability should be enough to get him more snaps.

Sewo Olonilua

With Jamize Olawale opting out, undrafted rookie Sewo Olonilua has a clear path to the active roster. Like Olawale, Olonilua is a versatile player who was a solid runner for the Horned Frogs. Still, special teams will be his key to the roster but it helps that he has no competition at the moment.
