Alvin Kamara enters 2020 season with everything to prove
Alvin Kamara, now fully healthy, has a ton to prove with the Saints in 2020.
The New Orleans Saints roster boasts some incredible talent. Offensively, the Saints have some of the best weapons in the league. Drew Brees and Michael Thomas are the top of the list. However, one name seemed to get less attention last season, which was Alvin Kamara. As the former Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2017, the hype around Kamara was real.
Everything looked to turn in his favor, especially with Mark Ingram leaving. However, 2019 ended up being an injury-plagued year for Kamara. Looking back, he was dealing with a severe knee injury and the offseason couldn’t come fast enough for him. Thankfully, things are looking up for him as Kamara has now spoken openly about it.
As for the 2020 NFL season, it leaves a big question for Kamara’s outlook beyond this year. In particular, will this season be his make-or-break year with the Saints? Basically, will the Saints decide to extend Kamara when the season ends or let him walk? It’s not going to be an easy decision but is one the team, Kamara and fans have already been considering.

Pressure is mounting for Alvin Kamara in the 2020 season.
If Kamara has an impressive 2020 season, then the Saints would be foolish not to extend him. New Orleans doesn’t have a solid backup plan if he leaves. They do have some talented guys on the roster but no one who touches Kamara’s talent when he hits the field.
Moreover, Brees staying past this year would make extending the running back more enticing as well. While it’s highly unlikely, the Saints would want to keep Kamara as another one of their heavy-hitters.
At the same time, keeping Kamara after losing Brees would also be a smart move. Without Brees, the Saints might struggle and they need someone who can make plays and be dependable. As long as the 2020 season goes well for Kamara, then the answer is simple. But we all know how finicky the NFL and the players can be, so nothing is ever as simple as they make it out to be.
On the other side of the coin, the Saints might have to let Kamara go for reasons other than his talent. The Saints’ 2017 draft class was impressive and no doubt they have other guys they’ll want to lock down.
While Kamara is a great player, the team might decide to go in another direction. Additionally, the Saints could be looking to rebuild some aspects of the organization without Brees, and Kamara might be a victim.
Ultimately, the decision is going on what the Saints deem necessary. If they think trading Kamara is in their best interest, they’ll do it. If they believe keeping him will help the team, then they’ll extend him. Considering how much work he put into being ready for the 2020 season, the New Orleans Saints need to give him the benefit of the doubt.
Overall though, Alvin Kamara will do what’s best for him as the Saints will. If they can’t agree, then we might see him in a different uniform. If they can, then we have something to look forward to in 2021. Either way, 2020 is going to be a big year for Alvin Kamara and cement his future with the New Orleans Saints.
