Green Bay Packers players with most to prove in 2020 training camp
By Joe Kipp
5. Billy Turner, RG/RT
The Packers signed Billy Turner to be their new swing tackle last year – a player capable of filling in at any position along the offensive line at a moment’s notice. Turner started all 16 games at right guard for Green Bay in 2019 after inking a four-year contract before the season. Over his previous six seasons, he’s played and started at every position on the offensive line excluding center.
It’s hard to imagine that Turner could be the team’s starting right tackle entering Week 1, but that’s exactly what could happen. The Packers elected to let stalwart Bryan Bulaga walk away in free agency, signing a three-year deal with the Los Angeles Chargers. Green Bay signed Rick Wagner to be a potential replacement.
In the meantime, it appears Turner is in the midst of a fight for a starting role. On the first day of training camp, Turner opened the day at right tackle, then took reps at right guard later on.
Turner appears to be competing for a starting job with Lane Taylor at guard and Wagner at right tackle. The Packers aren’t going to just hand it to Turner, even with the contract he signed last offseason. Turner has a cap hit of $8.1 million this coming season, more than Taylor and Wagner combined. He’ll have a lot to prove in the coming weeks, especially because of Green Bay’s lack of depth at offensive tackle.
