Is there really a backup quarterback competition for the New Orleans Saints?

Training camp for the New Orleans Saints has already been filled with excitement. Of course, one major part of the training camp is the competition for positions. This year, the Saints have something special in the works. With Drew Brees likely in his last year with the team, there’s a pretty big quarterback competition going on for the backup spot.

Affectionately nicknamed “Taymeis” by Brees, Taysom Hill and Jameis Winston are both in unique situations. For Winston, he’s looking at a chance to lead a team again while Hill is looking for his chance to prove he’s more than just a jack-of-all-trades.

Between the two though, the major question is if there is actually a competition, both for the backup quarterback job this year and potentially as Brees’ successor, and if we’ll be seeing one overtake the other eventually.

It’s obvious the Saints are playing up this angle with Hill and Winston. It makes for a more interesting training camp storyline. With everything going on in the world, it’s nice to indulge in a little bit of fun. With all that being said, there is definitely competition in the outward sense. The more pressing question is if the Saints truly believe there’s a competition internally.

Is Jameis Winston or Taysom Hill more likely to replace Brees with the New Orleans Saints?

Winston is the clear frontrunner between the two. As good as Hill has been, he lacks the same experience at quarterback. Winston wasn’t perfect in Tampa Bay, which is why they sent him packing this offseason. Having said that, he’s a former No. 1 overall pick for a reason.

Moving to the Saints is an entirely new chapter for him. He’s going to have a chance at becoming a franchise guy along with learning from Brees. It’s truly a win-win situation for Winston at this point.

Ultimately, it’s his job to lose if he doesn’t get it together and stop throwing so many interceptions. One report from training camp had him going 1-for-2 and ending up with the defensive player scoring off the intercepted pass he threw.

Hill has plenty of room for improvement as well. He’s been with the Saints since 2018 and has seen his role grow over time. His advantage over Winston is being well-versed in the team’s playbook and strategy.

One will eventually overtake the other in any competition for New Orleans, though. There’s no way that the Saints don’t already have “their guy” in mind and are looking to make sure they make the right decision.
