One of the biggest surprises of last season was Tennessee Titans rookie wide receiver A.J. Brown emerging as fantasy football’s WR9 in non-PPR scoring. The second-round pick in the 2019 draft finished the regular season with 52 catches on 84 targets for 1,051 yards and eight touchdowns, which is quite impressive for a rookie.
It’s worth noting, though, that Brown’s rookie season could’ve been even better if Ryan Tannehill had been the starter for all 16 games. In the 10 games where Tannehill started, Brown had 38 receptions on 61 targets for 778 yards and six touchdowns. On a 16-game pace with that quarterback connection, Brown would’ve had 60 catches, 1,244 yards and nine touchdowns (rounding down).
For PPR formats, I tend to shy away from Brown at a time like the fourth round because, even if his target share increases, he’s still not going to be a reception monster. What he is, however, is a big-play threat, both working down the field and creating yards after the catch. That’s not going away in this offense, especially as he and Tannehill build even more of a rapport.
Brown may not be a top-10 wide receiver for the second straight season but saying that he’s a comfortable top-15 projection isn’t a stretch at all. His skill-set is perfectly suited for non-PPR leagues to take advantage of, which is why he was the pick at 4.01 in this fantasy football mock draft.
