The 1.01 (first overall selection) in any draft this year should be Christian McCaffrey, and Saquon Barkley is the clear-cut No. 2. The consensus No. 3 pick is Ezekiel Elliott, followed by Alvin and Dalvin (Kamara and Cook, respectively), in one order or another.
In nearly any format, those five players should go off the boards before we start getting cute. Let me be clear: Micheal Thomas is the only wide receiver who should go in the first round of leagues that are 10 teams or smaller in size.
With every-down running backs become a rarer commodity than ever, it still makes sense to draft as many as possible before they all fly off of the board. Ideally, fantasy football managers should lock up two starting running backs in the first three rounds, wherever possible; just don’t reach beyond the likes of Todd Gurley, James Conner or Chris Carson to do so
