3. Avery Williamson, Linebacker

Whether it’s injuries, lack of effort, or simply being a bad fit in defensive coordinator Mike Nolan’s scheme, not one of the linebackers for the Dallas Cowboys has impressed this season. Entering the year, there was a lot of excitement that Jaylon Smith and Leighton Vander Esch could return to their 2018 form. There was also the return of Sean Lee, who has dealt with a myriad of injuries in his career but somehow played all 16 games in 2019.

Fast-forward to Week 7 and Smith is the only one who has been healthy. Lee has yet to make his debut and LVE was lost in Week 1 to a broken collarbone. Surprisingly enough, he returned in Week 6 but was hardly heard from — although that’s not a huge indictment to him since he’s just returning to action.

Still, the team cannot realistically plan on Lee returning since history suggests that he might not even finish the year if he does. They also can’t keep getting beat by Jaylon Smith’s shortcomings, no matter how much money they paid him.

With that being said, they could look at Avery Williamson of the Jets, who might be available. The 28-year old is in the final year of his deal that will pay him roughly $2.75 million this season, most of which is already accounted for. This means Dallas could add a player with 533 career tackles, 14.5 sacks, and four interceptions on the cheap. Doesn’t sound too bad.
