NFL trade deadline Winner: New England Patriots

Does the Isaiah Ford trade move the needle all that much for the New England Patriots offense? Absolutely not. But that’s not the position that this team is in right now. Sitting at 2-5, they aren’t looking to make a short-sighted trade like the Mohamed Sanu deal of last season that cost them valuable capital. Instead, they gave up a 2022 seventh-round pick to get a player who could be a depth asset at a position where they are sorely lacking.

Not only is the Ford trade a good long-term play by Bill Belichick but so too is not moving on from any of the other pieces on the roster. While it would’ve been nice to get a Stephon Gilmore trade done given his age and the state of affairs in New England, the value had to be right. With the asking price, they should be perfectly content sitting on their assets and moving forward, likely to a top-10 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

NFL trade deadline Loser: Dallas Cowboys

This might be a bit of a controversial opinion but the Dallas Cowboys should’ve been big sellers at the trade deadline. They did deal Everson Griffen to the Lions but they are in a position with Dak Prescott and the state of their team right now where they should’ve bought in more whole-heartedly.

Dallas isn’t going anywhere but to the top 10 of the 2021 draft order this season. But they are rich with assets as they were planning on a big postseason run this year. Subsequently, they could’ve looked to clear up potential cap space by trading away someone like Michael Gallup (1.5 years left on his rookie deal) before they have to let him walk for nothing. Or maybe test the market more serious for Aldon Smith, who has been resurgent in his return to the league.

Regardless, the Cowboys have a chance to really attack the future with Prescott and a high draft pick. Not stockpiling any more draft ammo at the deadline feels like a missed opportunity.
