Trey Lance, NDSU – Best 2021 NFL Draft Fit: Washington Football Team

There’s no denying the Washington Football team will look for a new signal-caller. Dwayne Haskins didn’t get a fair shot but he’s not the answer for Washington under Ron Rivera. Alex Smith deserves to be the 2020 NFL Comeback Player of the Year for what he’s been able to accomplish. However, he’s not the quarterback of the future; he’s barely holding down the starting job as it is.

Rivera knows the value of an athletic at quarterback and so does his offensive coordinator Scott Turner. The dynamic skill-set of Cam Newton with Scott Turner’s father (Norv Truner) helped the Panthers finish the season 15-1. Trey Lance is the type of quarterback ideally suited for Washington.

Lance took 2020 off to focus on the draft — he had nothing to prove. The 6-4, 225-pound FCS quarterback was perfect in his only season as a starter. In 2019, he threw 28 touchdowns, zero interceptions while also running for 1,100 yards and 14 scores.

Turner will have to tweak his scheme to more of a spread for Lance to succeed early. With his elite arm talent, a basic understanding of Pro-Style concepts, and running ability, Lance could find success like Josh Allen did for the Bills. He’s a bit of a project but his upside is endless, perfectly suited for Washington.
