Sam Darnold 2021 landing spot No. 5: New Orleans Saints

The Saints are appearing on just about every quarterback post I’m working on and that’s because they’ll be in the market for one. We’ve seen them be aggressive in signing backups, bringing in Teddy Bridgewater and Jameis Winston in recent years, but neither of those guys are going to be the next starter in the Big Easy.

Drew Brees could very well be hanging up the cleats after this season and while Taysom Hill has been a nice story, the Saints shouldn’t turn to him full-time next year. With the Saints being a playoff team, they won’t have a high draft pick and while they could trade up, they still won’t acquire either of the top tier quarterbacks, who are going No. 1 and No. 2.

So, where does that leave the Saints? If they want to go the free-agent route, they could have a few decent options, but if they really want to shake things up, they could trade for 23-year-old Sam Darnold and see what he can do with a good team and in a good organization.

We don’t know if Darnold’s failures to this point are a result of the team he’s playing for or if he’s just not a good quarterback and if the Saints want to try and find out that answer, bringing him in via trade could make a lot of sense. He’d have Hill to learn from and the Saints could still draft a quarterback if they wanted to provide more competition.

This probably doesn’t happen, but it wouldn’t be the worst idea for Sean Payton and the Saints front office to consider.
