Cam Newton is a good quarterback but he’s not Hall of Fame worthy.

With Cam Newton‘s lackluster performance on Thursday Night Football, it appears evident that his career is nearing the end. The 31-year-old Newton was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft after an incredible season at Auburn and he went on to turn heads as the quarterback of the Carolina Panthers.

There’s no debating that Newton was a good quarterback because he was. Not only was he a good passer, but he really frustrated defenses with his legs, rushing for over 500 yards in six of his first seven seasons. Newton was a lot of fun to watch, but with his career winding down, many are going to ask the famous question — Is he good enough to get into the Hall of Fame someday?

My answer is no. Cam Newton has been a good player, but good players don’t get into the Hall of Fame. You have to be great if you want to be enshrined in Canton.

Cam Newton does not deserve to be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

For one, it’s not the end all be all, but championships talk, especially for quarterbacks, and Newton has zero on his professional resumé. He led the Panthers to Super Bowl 50 in the 2015 season but they lost to the Broncos and Newton was heavily criticized for not diving on a loose fumble, which proved costly.

Secondly, Newton’s numbers aren’t all that impressive in all honestly. He’s only thrown for more than 25 touchdowns once in his career and he did so in the 2015 season where he threw 35 scores and rushed for another 10 touchdowns. Newton won the league MVP in 2015 for his efforts and he definitely deserved it, but that was the only season where his numbers really popped.

Third, as good as Newton was in his MVP season, he didn’t even throw for 4,000 yards that year and only threw for 4,000 yards just once (2011, his rookie season). He’s also had double-digit interceptions in every season except for 2019 and he only started two games that year.

Cam Newton is a talented player and was a big name when he was playing at a high-level in the NFL, but when it comes time to discuss if he belongs in the Hall of Fame or not, that’s a big, fat no.
