Kenny Gainwell, Memphis – Best 2021 NFL Draft Fit: Pittsburgh Steelers

It’s time the Steelers look for a more dynamic back to boost their backfield. James Conner is decent, but he’s also a free agent at the end of the season. Benny Snell averaged under four yards per carry for his short career. Anthony McFarland Jr hasn’t done much, but he deserves an opportunity and a running mate.

The Steelers miss the multifaceted threat that LeVeon Bell was; Kenny Gainwell is that guy.

At 5-10, 210 pounds, the Tiger ball carrier caught 51 passes for 610-yards and three scores. His production was a result of offensive coordinator Kevin Johns lining Gainwell in the slot. That type of versatility on third downs is something the Steelers have been missing.

They’ve also missed big-play ability on the ground. At Memphis, Gainwell showed why he’s a home run threat with his 6.3 yards per carry in 2019. He’s patient yet doesn’t dance and takes what’s given to him. The junior rusher exploits and explodes through holes. He keeps his shoulders square and runs with confidence.

Despite his frame, Gainwell does run with power and pushes the pile. He slips through tackles and doesn’t go down with ease. He understands how to make guys miss at the line of scrimmage. And he’s tough to bring down in the open field. Gainwell and the Steelers are a perfect match.
