3. Defensive playmakers are, well, making plays

Make no mistake, the Green Bay Packers defense is not perfect. There is still the chance that they are susceptible to the run, though that’s less of a concern with the way that the offense is playing and the way that forces opposing offenses to play. However, this team does have an obvious group of playmakers that have been starring as they’re supposed to.

Perhaps the biggest star of the bunch is cornerback Jaire Alexander. For all of the love that Jalen Ramsey, who Green Bay saw last week in the Divisional Round, got this season, Alexander might’ve been just as good. Against the Rams, PFF charted that Alexander was targeted twice and allowed just one reception, a catch where Alexander wrapped up and score a tackle for a three-yard loss.

That’s been par for the course with the young corner this season, though. Look at what he did against some of the best wide receivers in the NFL this season:

But it’s not just Alexander who has been stepping up. Za’Darius Smith notched a clutch sack against the Rams after leading the team with 12.5 in the regular season. Meanwhile, Kenny Clark had 1.5 sacks to his credit as he’s finally healthy and hitting his stride at the right time. And even players such as Rashan Gary, who had 1.5 sacks of his own against LA, are popping up.

Green Bay’s offense is the most important element for the team’s success. But their job is less pressured and simply easier when the defensive playmakers are making splash plays. The Packers are seeing that from their guys right now.
