Detroit Lions: 5 Quarterbacks who could replace Matthew Stafford
Detroit Lions QB target No. 4: Jameis Winston
Whenever the New Orleans Saints signed Jameis Winston in 2020 free agency upon the completion of his rookie contract with Tampa Bay, there was a belief that he could possibly be the successor to Drew Brees. But as Brees is seemingly set to walk away, Winston does not appear to be their top option to replace him with Taysom Hill in the fold.

Subsequently, it’s entirely feasible that Winston isn’t interested in being the backup to Hill in the Big Easy and could test the free-agent market once again. Should that indeed be the way things play out for the former No. 1 overall pick in free agency, it would not be remotely shocking to see the Detroit Lions express some interest in him.
For better or worse, Winston is a known commodity in the league. The former Heisman Trophy-winner has all of the arm talent in the world and has definitely made his share of highlight-reel plays throughout his career. At the same time, though, his wildly erratic decision-making have made him turnover-prone throughout his career, culminating in the first-ever 30-touchdown, 30-interception season in his final year with the Buccaneers.
If the Lions are simply interested in finding a stopgap option for the 2021 season, though, they could roll the dice with Winston quite easily. Not only should he come to the Motor City on a modest contract but his upside remains, at the very least, intriguing. As such, Campbell and Detroit could dip their toes in the water for a year and then reassess thereafter.
