New England Patriots: 5 Perfect fits in the 2021 NFL Draft
New England Patriots perfect draft fit No. 4: Pat Freiermuth, TE, Penn State
Josh McDaniels loves to use 12-personnel, but the Pats didn’t have the talent the position to run it successfully. It’s part of the reason why Cam Newton’s brief stint wasn’t a successful one.

Tight end Matt LaCosse, was set to play a major in the Patriots offense in 2020. Like many of his teammates, he opted out of the season, leaving the Pats with Ryan Izzo as the team’s No. 1 option at tight end. Meanwhile, rookies Devin Asiasi and Dalton Keene didn’t do anything to warrant a roster spot.
With that said, the No. 46 overall picks, should be Penn State tight end Pat Freiermuth, if he’s available. The 6-5, 258-pound pass-catcher fits the modern-day right end. He has the ideal length, bulk and awareness in space to box out defenders.
Although he’s not explosive, he’s sudden. He has enough acceleration to separate underneath. Additionally, he’s a good downfield threat and red zone target on back-shoulder throws. Once he catches the ball, he’s tough to bring down.
The aggressive attacking running style is reminiscent of Jeremy Shockey. He’s a great pick for the Pats, an excellent asset. Doubling down on offensive firepower is a smart move in the right direction.
