Dallas Cowboys 7-round 2021 mock draft: What if they do the unthinkable?
By Randy Gurzi
At pick 42 in the second round, the Dallas Cowboys address a need on the defensive side of the ball as they add TCU safety Trevon Moehrig. A deep safety with great ball skills, Moehrig has seven career interceptions — six of those coming over his final two seasons. He also had 20 pass break-ups in that same span, showing he has a nose for the ball.

He’s good in man coverage but he’s definitely at his best in zone coverage, which is likely where new defensive coordinator Dan Quinn will want to utilize him. Dallas could also have a major hole in this area with Xavier Woods set for free agency this offseason.
Woods, a sixth-round pick in 2017, has been a decent find for them but he never really took that next step as a starter. For that reason, he’s not likely to get a deal from the Cowboys as they could look to save money at the position.
Another reason Woods probably won’t be re-signed is the emergence of their2019 sixth-round pick, Donovan Wilson, out of Texas A&M. The second-year safety took a major step forward in 2020 and should be the starting strong safety going forward.
There’s not much of a chance the front office would want to go into this draft needing two starting safeties, but Wilson’s ascension gives them a little more comfort to watch Woods walk and it pays off with this selection.
