Early in the second quarter, they were able to take a narrow 10-7 lead with Clyde Edwards-Helaire punching it in from three yards out. Tampa Bay, however, was able to respond with a drive that culminated with a Ryan Succop 41-yard field goal to tie things up at 10-10.
From there, however, the Chiefs found their rhythm. Mahomes connected with Sammy Watkins for an 11-yard touchdown pass to give Kansas City the 17-10 advantage. Then the defense came up with a big play as Bashaud Breeland picked off Brady, setting up another score for the Chiefs, this time an eight-yard pass from Mahomes to Demarcus Robinson, leading KC into halftime up 24-10.
At the end of the first half, Brady sat at 19-of-28 for 220 yards with one score and one interception while Mahomes was lights-out with 16-of-19 for 201 yards and two scores. The rushing attacks, however, continued to be pedestrian with neither team topping 40 yards on the ground in the first half.
Godwin continued to shine with a 7-73-1 line in the first half while Gronk continued to connect with Brady, going for 61 yards on five catches. Outside of the touchdown scorers, though, Kelce stepped up big in the second quarter as he had three catches for 48 yards in the period.
Defensively, Breeland obviously made the biggest play but Chris Jones was a menace, notching three tackles for loss and really setting the tone in the trenches for the Chiefs.
