J.J. Watt free agency landing spot No. 2: New England Patriots

Among the five teams that could be possible landing spots for J.J. Watt now that he’s available, the New England Patriots are a bit of an outlier. While the other teams are at least in the conversation of teams that could make a move for a Super Bowl in the 2021 season, it’s hard to see that given the questions around the Pats.

With the departure of Tom Brady last offseason, the Patriots were already put behind the 8-ball and the failed Cam Newton experiment didn’t help matters in the slightest. Now they still have a hole to fill at quarterback and their offense has questions beyond that as well. But this is a team that can still win defensively.

It feels that it’s overlooked too often that no NFL team was affected as heavily by COVID-19 opt-outs than the Patriots, specifically on defense with Dont’a Hightower, Patrick Chung and many other key cogs choosing to sit out this past season. Now they’ll be back on the field for the 2021 season, which could be an uptick.

If Bill Belichick and Robert Kraft can sell Watt on their plan for the offense, there’s reason to believe that the Patriots could be much better next season. And adding Watt would certainly go a long way in helping that cause.
