2021 NFL free agency QB No. 9: C.J. Beathard

While with the San Francisco 49ers, the quarterback situation has never been all that settled. Jimmy Garoppolo is the starter but injuries have forced him out on a number of occasions, which is why we’ve gotten looks at C.J. Beathard in recent years.

Make no mistake, Beathard should not be assumed as a starting quarterback for any team, which highlights how shallow the position is in free agency. But for teams looking for backups, he’s experienced, young, and has enjoyed modest levels of success when put into action.

2021 NFL free agency QB No. 8: Tyrod Taylor

There is almost a spooky element to the way things have gone for Tyrod Taylor over the past few years. It seems as if every team that he signs with shoehorns him into the starting role only for a fluke injury to put him on the sidelines and allow a young quarterback to take the reins. That’s what happened with Baker Mayfield and then Justin Herbert.

Taylor is a conservative and athletic veteran who has enjoyed a decent amount of success in the league. Teams could do a lot worse than him if they are in need of a backup but it might be a stretch to bring him in as a starter — unless of course they want a rookie to play soon and thrive.

2021 NFL free agency QB No. 7: Cam Newton

Whenever the New England Patriots landed Cam Newton late in free agency last offseason, there was talk that the league made a mistake by letting that happen. As it turned out, that wasn’t totally the case as the former NFL MVP struggled down the stretch.

Newton was sporadic at best, particularly as a passer who struggled to consistently put the ball on target. However, he’s an experienced player who is capable of playing a role, especially as a red-zone weapon who can run the ball well. It’ll be intriguing to see which teams could take a chance on him.
