San Francisco 49ers dream free agency target No. 2: John Johnson, SS

Jaquiski Tartt is likely done with the 49ers after last season, which leaves a void at the strong safety spot. Subsequently, securing a well-built safety tandem could help fortify the defense, which would be especially true if they were also able to secure a strong cornerback in the offseason as well.

John Johnson is a marquee free agent likely in line for a big payday. And pairing him with Jimmie Ward on the back end of the secondary would be a huge get for San Francisco. Also, what better revenge on the Rams for letting him walk than staying within the division?

A third-round pick in 2017, Johnson thrived as a rookie, trailing only Trumaine Johnson on the Rams in terms of pass deflections. He set career highs in interceptions and tackles the next season before landing on injured reserve with a shoulder ailment in his third year. This past season, though, he was a team captain and Second-Team All-Pro member for Pro Football Focus.

Of the players currently on the roster who could benefit the most from any dream free agency targets, Ward might top the list. He’s versatile and could play all over the field. Pairing him with another versatile safety such as Johnson would give Ryans a ton of ability to move pieces around and get creative.
