Green Bay Packers: Grading Day 2 picks in 2021 NFL Draft
By Lucas Schuh
Green Bay Packers third-round pick (No. 85): Amari Rodgers, WR, Clemson
Seemingly since the beginning of time, Packers fans and pundits have been asking the franchise to draft a wide receiver. Last year, it didn’t happen at all; now, this year, they finally did it and added another A. Rodgers to their roster, trading up to get him at the back end of the third round to get him.
Like Myers in the second round, Amari Rodgers fits the Packers’ draft style. He is as explosive as can be and is essentially a rocked up running back playing wide receiver. Good luck to any defender trying to tackle Rodgers because he will run straight through them.
Again, just like Myers, the Clemson product is raw. Rodgers isn’t a separator in the short area. You aren’t going to play him outside either because of his small height and frame.
However, Rodgers does fit with the Packers’ creativity. Head coach Matt LaFleur loves to move pieces around and get creative. And I’m sure LaFleur will love him for that, but he will have to have most of his targets schemed up.
While it’s great the Packers drafted a receiver, they almost were forced to draft one. The Packers have no receivers on their books for 2022. While I’m sure Green Bay will re-sign Davante Adams, it will be much easier after bringing in a receiver from the draft. I wouldn’t doubt if Green Bay developed Rodgers in hopes that, when receivers leave, he can step into a more prominent role.
