Amid the Aaron Rodgers saga with the Green Bay Packers, Davante Adams will be a free agent after this season but he’s being clear about his future.

While the eyes of Green Bay Packers fans have certainly been on the seemingly never-ending Aaron Rodgers saga, the periphery has been occupied by the long-term future of Davante Adams. Arguably the best wide receiver in the NFL over the past couple seasons, Adams is set to hit free agency after the 2021 season. And with an uncertain quarterback situation, that has raised some concern that both Rodgers and Adams could depart.

I’ve maintained that I believe Rodgers will play for Green Bay in 2021. However, no one should be naive enough to think that a future Hall-of-Fame quarterback being disgruntled could also affect his top wide receiver, Adams.

Yet, when asked about his future on Thursday, Adams was cut-and-dry about the fact that he wants to remain in Green Bay. Per Bleacher Report’s Graham Matthews, Adams said this about his upcoming contract negotiations:

"“I’m not planning on going anywhere. [Aaron Rodgers’ status] is only one piece of it, though. Obviously the quarterback situation helps it, but the stars got to align across the board as far as contractually. We’ll figure all that stuff out and let it happen.”"

That sounds like a player who plans on being with the Packers for some time, perhaps independent of what Rodgers does. With that said, he also spoke about Rodgers with FOX News’ Paulina Dedaj, per Peter Bukowski:

So what should we read from all of this and should fans expect Adams to sign a new deal with Green Bay?

Packers fans should breathe a cautious sigh of relief that Davante Adams doesn’t plan on leaving.

Perhaps this is off base but my read on this is that Davante Adams plans on playing for the Green Bay Packers beyond the 2021 season independent of Rodgers. That does not make it a certainty and, in fact, he could just be saying the right things. But what he’s saying does seem to indicate that.

For as all-world as Rodgers is, Adams has proven his ability as an individual, a player who can have success as a wide receiver independent of quarterback play. Thus, he’s someone who could stick in Green Bay with Jordan Love — or another quarterback — and still be a top-tier player in the league. And you have to believe the organization would want to keep him no matter what happens with the man under center.

Next. One NFL legend each team wishes they had for 2021. dark

Having said that, Packers fans should exercise some caution with any rising optimism. Things are quite clearly combustable in Green Bay and, say what you will about Rodgers, the quarterback is evidence of that. As such, even if Davante Adams wants to remain in place, it’s still far from a formality that will happen at this point.
