3. The Houston Texans are a team where Cam Newton could actually start

Looking at the NFL entering the 2021 season, there’s only one team that Cam Newton could immediately show up to and start for, at least assuming a week and a half is enough to get him up to speed on the playbook. That team is the downtrodden Houston Texans.

We’re all aware of the ugly Deshaun Watson situation and, though he’s projected to make the roster, there is a better-than-zero (Re: almost certain) chance that he’s suspended indefinitely at some point this year. That leaves Tyrod Taylor to be the starter for the Texans this season, which doesn’t inspire confidence.

At this point, Taylor is a good backup but has largely been a player who has paved the way for rookies, though in different ways, to take over. He did that for Baker Mayfield in Cleveland and most recently with Justin Herbert in LA. He doesn’t inspire much confidence as the starter.

Houston isn’t going to be all that competitive no matter who plays at quarterback, Watson, Taylor, Newton or otherwise. Having said that, Newton would give the Texans the best chance at offensive success of the players who will be able to play this season. He gives Houston the chance to look at guys like Nico Collins or boost trade value for Brandin Cooks. That’s the goal for this season and Newton could help accomplish that.
