1. The Dallas Cowboys need Cam Newton to back up Dak Prescott

With Dak Prescott nursing a shoulder injury throughout training camp, the backup quarterback spot for the Dallas Cowboys was in full focus throughout the preseason. Though there were hardly any players separating themselves definitively, Cooper Rush ended up taking the job over Garrett Gilbert and Ben DiNucci.

But the Cowboys learned last season how valuable the backup quarterback spot can be. Sure, if Prescott were to go down and miss more than half the season again, things in Dallas are going to go awry. However, it’s much easier to see the ship staying afloat with Cam Newton as the backup rather than Rush.

As Randy Gurzi noted for the site, Newton would be able to run a similar offense to Prescott, though it would likely have a heavier focus on running from the quarterback spot. But even then, that type of mobility might be valuable, allowing the Cowboys to shift to a heavier RPO attack that utilized Ezekiel Elliott more.

At the end of the day, it remains to be seen if the Cowboys would use limited funds to sign Newton. But when you look at the fit and the need, there’s no one who can deny that Dallas would make a ton of sense as a team to kick the tires on Newton now that he’s available.
