NFL: Ranking every quarterback midseason: 25. Ben Roethlisberger – Pittsburgh Steelers

Watching Ben Roethlisberger now is kind of sad. He was once considered the toughest quarterback in the NFL. He didn’t mind taking a hit to throw a 50-yard bomb. Now, he has to take a hit just to find a checkdown to Najee Harris. It used to be that the Steelers would run as far as Roethlisberger took them. Now, they are winning in spite of Roethlisberger.

Prior to his bye week, Roethlisberger did start to get a little bit of a rhythm. He played very well against an undermanned Seattle secondary in an overtime win. However, he beat Geno Smith on the other side, who’s already been mentioned on this list. Roethlisberger really needs a signature win this season, especially since it’s probably his last season in the NFL.

Roethlisberger is still being a little too timid, even in his good performances. He has a very good receiving core even with Juju Smith-Schuster out for the system. They still have Dionte Johnson and Chase Claypool on the outside. Also, Pat Friermuth might be a nice little gem they got out of Penn State. There are pieces here that Roethlisberger would have taken advantage of in past years. He needs to turn back the clock to keep the Steelers as contenders this season.
