NFL 25 Dream Teams that ended up being failures: 21. 1999 Denver Broncos

The 1999 Denver Broncos were stacked. They had just won back-to-back Super Bowls. They had the best offense in the game, and the defense wasn’t far behind. However, John Elway retired. That changed the entire dynamic of the team, but Brian Griese was here to be the ultra talenteted quarterback to take over the reigns. The Broncos weren’t expected to lose a step at all.

Spoiler alert: they lost a step. In fact, they lost like 10 steps.

“Well, they’re not going to be as good without John.’ Well, I’ll tell you what: They’ve got another thing coming, because we’re going to be a great football team.” — Bill Romanowski

That was the mentality of the team back in 1999. The Broncos acted like they were going to play with a chip on their shoulder the entire season. It seemed like a good idea at the time. It quickly was not a good idea. The Broncos lost the first four games of the season. Griese was struggling to deal with the pressure. Terrell Davis got injured in Week 4, and there was nobody to break the Broncos out of their slump.
