Chicago Bears Free Agent Target No.2: WR Chris Godwin

Ok, now you throw the kitchen sink, and maybe Godwin will catch it and cash it. Although he is coming off a season with a torn ACL, and perhaps Tampa Bay will attempt to resign him, it’s worth going for it.

Right now, Darnell Mooney may be the only reliable target for the Bears, given the expectation of Allen Robinson leaving in free agency. As such, the Bears get a new, younger weapon for Justin Fields.

A key member of Tampa Bay’s recent surge, Godwin won a Super Bowl ring in 2020 and converted the critical play late in the fourth quarter against the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Title Game. Anyone that helps beat the Packers sounds pretty good for the Bears. Before the injury, Godwin caught 98 passes for over 1,100 yards and five scores this past season. This was in 14 games.

It will no doubt be harder to be a No.1 receiver than a No.2 because the primary coverage is directed at you. That’s not to say the Bears can’t have success with Godwin. But, if Luke Getsy is what the Bears envision him as an offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach Tyke Tolbert can get more out of Godwin, then Chicago could have some luck at pass catchers.

This is all about developing Justin Fields; let it be clear.
