NFL head coach hires: Doug Pederson, Jacksonville Jaguars
The Urban Meyer NFL experience came to a crashing end during his first season in Jacksonville.
Since then, the Jaguars further showed their incompetence, turning away Byron Leftwich, and someone falling backward into hiring a Super Bowl-winning head coach in Doug Pederson.
While Leftwich probably made the most sense, Pederson is the right hire.
As the former head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles, Pederson won a Super Bowl in his second season and helped develop a very raw Carson Wentz into an MVP candidate.
Pederson is an adult, and I think that’s half the battle. He has extensive playoff experience and evidence of developing a quarterback.
Trevor Lawrence should be happy with this hire. I think Pederson helps Lawrence take a notable leap in year two while the Jaguars continue to draft and sign players to fill out their roster.
Perhaps this is a franchise-altering move for Jacksonville, as Super Bowl-winning head coaches generally don’t come available for head coaching jobs.
