Dallas Cowboys trade target No. 2: Zack Baun, Linebacker

Back in the 2020 NFL Draft, the Cowboys showed interest in Wisconsin linebacker Zack Baun. He was a bit of a hybrid player for the Badgers as he lined up at linebacker but still rushed the passer. In his final collegiate season, he had 75 tackles, 19.5 for a loss, and 12.5 sacks.

Dallas didn’t wind up drafting him and Baun found himself with the New Orleans Saints who took him in Round 3. It felt like a huge steal for the Saints but after two seasons, he has yet to become a full-time starter. In 32 games, Baun has seven starts and has recorded 42 tackles with only one going for a loss and no pass defenses or fumbles.

Part of the problem with Baun not getting on the field much is the talent at the position in New Orleans. Demario Davis is a veteran leader who is playing lights out right now and Pete Werner had a strong rookie season where he was graded as a top-10 linebacker.

With a starting spot not in his future, Baun could be a player the Saints are willing to take calls on. For Dallas, it could be a smart move as they have Leighton Vander Esch and Keanu Neal about to hit free agency. Baun could be a more affordable option for them as long as it’s not too costly to make the trade.
