The San Francisco 49ers are about to do a lot of promoting from within, it seems, and that might not get them a lot of recognition from the national media.
The biggest move the team has made so far was signing former Chiefs cornerback Charvarius Ward to a multi-year deal and making him their obvious CB1.
That move gets the 49ers a corner that has really excelled in man coverage and whose best days could still be ahead. He did some great things for the Chiefs as a former undrafted player.
Losing Laken Tomlinson at guard hurts, but that’s why the 49ers drafted Aaron Banks in the second round last year.
Even if the teams continues to lose some of their veteran free agents like nickel cornerback K’Waun Williams and Jaquiski Tartt, there are potential reinforcements already on the roster from last year’s draft class like Ambry Thomas and Talanoa Hufanga.
More moves should be expected from the 49ers but for now, they have yet to trade Jimmy Garoppolo so we’ll have to see what kind of return they can get there.
As the Trey Lance era is ushered in, the 49ers haven’t exactly been aggressive but they did cross off one of their top needs.
