Denver Broncos offseason grades: Randy Gregory signing

Grade: B

The last time the Denver Broncos acquired a player who wore number 94 with the Dallas Cowboys, it resulted in a Super Bowl win two years later.

How much will the Randy Gregory signing help Denver?

George Paton is banking on his impact being greater than that of players like Von Miller, Chandler Jones, or Haason Reddick, other top edge rushers from this free agent class who presumably could have been had by the Denver Broncos for the right price.

Miller even took to social media campaigning for a return to Denver before the Broncos fixed their gaze on Randy Gregory.

While Haason Reddick was likely laser-focused on Philadelphia, it’s not out of the question to think the Denver Broncos could have signed any one of Miller, Chandler Jones, or Randy Gregory if they wanted. They chose Gregory, whose past history of suspensions caused many Broncos fans to lament over the eventuality of not getting Von Miller back and instead signing a guy who had just six sacks a year ago.

But the tape tells a different story with Gregory, who is an outstanding pass rusher with perhaps his most productive days ahead.

Still, this move comes with some inherent risk, which is why the Broncos spread Gregory’s deal out over five years and gave him just $28 million in guarantees.

The Gregory signing would be an “A” except it stings that the Broncos did not sign either of Jones or Miller and the fact that they signed with other AFC clubs? Well, we’ll have to find out what kind of impact that will have as the 2022 NFL season goes along.
