Dallas Cowboys: 3 late free agents to bolster roster

Dallas Cowboys FA Target No. 1: Tyrann Mathieu, S
One huge change from the Jason Garrett era when it comes to roster building under Mike McCarthy is the attention Dallas pays to the safety position. For years, they plugged in late-round picks hoping to find a diamond in the rough.
However, McCarthy and defensive coordinator Dan Quinn have a different approach. Last season, they added Damontae Kazee, Malik Hooker, and Jayron Kearse. All three performed well and they ended up re-signing both Kearse (who was a defensive leader in 2021) and Hooker.
That doesn’t mean they can’t use more depth at the position, especially since they often fielded three safeties with Kearse playing a bit of a hybrid linebacker role. That’s why it would make sense for them to finally target Tyrann Mathieu, who is one of the better safeties in the game.
Mathieu has been on the open market before and fans have clamored for him to join Big D – but the powers that be continued to claim he wasn’t a fit in their scheme. Of course, any scheme that can’t use good players should be thrown out, but that’s for another discussion.
With Dan Quinn running the defense now, there’s no way this scheme wouldn’t welcome Mathieu. Of course, the only issue right now with Mathieu is age as he will turn 33 this season but he still put up 76 tackles and three picks last season for the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Cowboys’ defense was much better in 2021 due to their ability to take the ball away and adding a guy with 26 career picks would only help them get better in this area.
