Minnesota Vikings joined by New Orleans Saints in bad trade department

2. What are the New Orleans Saints doing?

Sometimes it feels like certain teams just make trades for the sake of it.

The New Orleans Saints put together a plan in each respective draft class, and they literally could not care less how they achieve their preferred result.

They have had some significant success with this strategy in the past, meaning they don’t care if they have 9 picks or 3 — as long as they get their guys.

They have proven that once again in 2022 after making two very odd trades. The reason to dislike these selections has nothing to do with the players they got.

I really like Chris Olave. I really like Trevor Penning.

I don’t know if I love them at the expense of potentially acquiring a long-term franchise QB in the 2023 NFL Draft.

The Saints depleted a lot of their primary Draft capital to make these two particular selections.

The Commanders got okay value in this trade with the Saints, adding additional picks in rounds three and four to move down just five spots.

The Saints apparently don’t much care about who they could get at those spots by comparison of having Chris Olave and Trevor Penning.

Olave should be a good fit and a strong complement to Michael Thomas. Trevor Penning should be a good long-term option to replace Terron Armstead.

But the Saints gave up their 2023 first-round pick, 2022 third-round pick, and 2022 fourth-round pick to get these guys.

We’ll have to see whether or not that was worth it.
