The Dallas Cowboys made some smart picks on Day 2 of the 2022 NFL Draft then kicked off Day 3 with another solid selection, adding Wisconsin tight end Jake Ferguson

Heading into the 2022 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys needed to get more depth at the tight end spot — after releasing Blake Jarwin. On day three, they found their guy as they took Jake Ferguson out of Wisconsin at pick No. 129.

Ferguson wasn’t the biggest name in the draft at tight end, but he’s a perfect fit for the Dallas offense. He might not be a great in-line blocker but under Mike McCarthy, that’s not as important as it used to be for the Cowboys. What does matter is how well Ferguson does in the passing game.

Listed at 6-foot-5 and 250-pounds, Ferguson ran very clean routes and has an excellent release off the line of scrimmage. He also has strong hands and a wide catch radius.

At Wisconsin, he was never fully utilized as he never had more than 456 yards or four touchdowns in a season — both of which came in his freshman campaign back in 2018.

Ferguson was, however, incredibly consistent. He caught a pass in nearly every game and could be counted on to do his job the right way.

In Dallas, he will fight for the No. 2 spot behind Dalton Schultz and should be able to hold that role down as a rookie.

He joins Tyler Smith and Jalen Tolbert on offense and Sam Williams, who remains the only defensive addition so far in the 2022 NFL Draft by Dallas.

The next pick for Dallas comes at 155 in Round 5. They could still use some help at defensive tackle, linebacker, or along the interior of their offensive line.
