No. 13 NFL quarterback in 2022: Deshaun Watson, Cleveland Browns

I’m just not ready to vault Deshaun Watson back into the top 10 quarterback discussion.

Not yet.

Watson has to earn that type of distinction back on the field, where we haven’t seen him since the Texans’ pathetic finish to the 2020 season.

I’m not saying great quarterbacks don’t go through slumps if they’re on bad teams, but how did a Watson-led Texans team only win four games in 2020?

There was a lot going on with that team off the field, to be fair, but Watson was certainly contributing to the distractions. We only found out about it months after the season was over.

Now a member of the Cleveland Browns, Watson has the distinction of highest-paid NFL player in league history, at least in terms of one individual contract.

No NFL player has ever received a guaranteed contract the likes of Watson’s $230 million deal with the Browns.

Now, he must elevate this roster to legitimate Super Bowl contender status — immediately — or the Browns will face the music for that kind of move.

Football-wise, it’s hard to blame the Browns for this. Watson has shown signs of being a legitimate MVP candidate in the past.

In terms of how this move makes the organization look?

The only word that comes to mind is desperate.
