NFL record likely to fall No. 9: Tackles for a loss

Current record: 39 — J.J. Watt in 2012

J.J. Watt is a three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year and if you want to know why — consider this — he is not only the record holder for most tackles for a loss in a season, but he also is second with 29. And he recorded that feat twice, doing so in 2014 and 2015.

Watt is currently a member of the Arizona Cardinals but he had just 16 tackles and a sack in seven games. He will be 33 this season and hopes to rediscover some of his magic but no matter how things go for him with the Cards, he will always be remembered as one of the most dominant defenders during his 10 seasons with Houston.

He made the Pro Bowl four times in a row from 2012 through 2015 and twice hit 20.5 sacks. He seemed to live in the opponent’s backfield and helped carry his team to the playoffs despite some questionable offensive talent — especially under center.

Still, his record could be threatened with the extra game and one player who could challenge him is his brother, T.J. Watt. Last season, the younger Watt tied the NFL record for sacks with 22.5 and had a total of 21 tackles for a loss. Then there was Micah Parsons, who had 20 tackles for a loss as a rookie. Should the game slow down for him, he too could be in the mix for this record.

Players most likely to break the record: T.J. Watt, Micah Parsons
