Miami Dolphins: Verone McKinley III, S, Oregon
59. Oregon. Verone McKinley III. S. player. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. S
If Verone McKinley III were a couple of inches taller and a tick faster, he would have likely been a late day two or early day three pick. But at 5-foot-10 and 198-pounds, he was called an undersized safety with small arms and not enough speed.
Despite this, he was a human highlight reel for the Oregon Ducks. In his final season, he had 77 tackles and six picks, finishing his career with 172 tackles and 11 interceptions.
Even with his shortcomings, there was an expectation he would be drafted due to his incredible game tape. If that wasn’t enough, he was also one of the leaders of the defense, known for being a quarterback of the defense.
McKinley does still have what it takes to carve out a nice NFL career for himself and will get his first chance with the Miami Dolphins. The issue there, however, is the depth. Miami has Jevon Holland and Brandon Jones entrenched as starters with Eric Rowe serving as the third safety.
Sheldrick Redwine, a former fourth-round pick of the Cleveland Browns, is next on the depth chart but he might be someone McKinley can leapfrog as he tries to make it to the Dolphins opening week roster.
