Chicago Bears camp battle to watch: Running Backs

With new head coach Matt Eberflus and offensive coordinator Luke Getsy, the Chicago Bears look to re-establish their running game. Under Matt Nagy, there were games in which the running backs were forgotten. With Fields still feeling his way around the NFL, going to the running game is critical.

David Montgomery will be the starter and Khalil Herbert his main backup. The battle for the back behind Herbert should be an interesting one, though.

Darrynton Evans signed as a free agent. He spent the last two seasons with the Tennessee Titans. Also, Poles drafted Trestan Ebner in the sixth round.

This should be a fun battle to watch. Both are fast runners. Evans runs a 4.41-40 while Ebner runs a 4.43. Both are in the mold of Herbert, slashing backs who hit the hole quickly and use their speed.

What may be the deciding factor in playing time could be Ebner’s pass-catching ability. He played at Baylor, a wide-open offense that threw a boatload of passes.

At Baylor, Ebner caught 127 passes for 1,515 yards and 11 touchdowns. If he could make the adjustment to the NFL quickly, he can take over the role Tarik Cohen had when he was in Chicago. In fact, if Ebner plays well enough he could challenge Herbert for some snaps.
