New England Patriots: Jonnu Smith, TE

It was really hard to figure out what the New England Patriots were doing when they signed Jonnu Smith. The former Tennessee Titans tight end was added ahead of the 2021 season as the Patriots gave him a four-year deal worth $50 million.

At the same time, they signed another tight end, bringing in Hunter Henry on a three-year, $37.5 million deal. That meant they suddenly had two tight ends making $12.5 million per season. The problem is, it was hard to see why they gave Smith such a massive deal.

While Henry was known as a solid receiving tight end that wasn’t a slouch in the blocking department, Smith came in without nearly as much production — and he also wasn’t known as a great blocker.

In four seasons with the Titans, Smith had 114 receptions for 1,302 yards and 16 touchdowns. His most productive season was 2020 when he had 448 yards on 41 catches with eight touchdowns. As for Henry, he was with the Chargers for five seasons but only appeared in four due to an injury that cost him his entire 2018 campaign.

Henry joined the Pats with 196 receptions for 2,322 yards and 21 touchdowns. As expected, he was much better in 2022 than Smith. Henry had 603 yards and nine touchdowns on 50 receptions while Smith finished with 28 catches for 294 yards and only one touchdown.

New England clearly over-valued Smith.
