NFL Week 2 Game #1: Los Angeles Chargers (1-0) @ Kansas City Chiefs (1-0)

Thursday 8:15 PM, Prime Video

Patrick Mahomes’ explosive performance silenced his doubters. A five-touchdown outing isn’t unusual for Mahomes – it just shocked people. Many believed life without Tyreek Hill would hinder success for Kansas City’s quarterback. Instead, the offense remained fluent. Travis Kelce and Juju Smith-Schuster were reliable targets for Mahomes throughout the game. The two combined for 200 yards in a 44-21 victory over the Cardinals.

An impressive team win will give Andy Reid’s opponents extra confidence on Thursday night. Explosive performances from Justin Herbert helped Chargers defeat Las Vegas, 24-19. On offense, Justin Herbert worked efficiently. His 279 passing yards and three touchdowns came without a turnover. Eight receivers finished the game with receptions – displaying an ability to spread the field.

The defense will determine the outcome of the divisional rivalry. Los Angeles forced three interceptions in their week one victory. A sack spree from Khalil Mack helped the defense record six sacks – double Kansas City’s total. Mahomes was one of three quarterbacks that stayed clean in week one, and he intends to keep it that way. Steve Spagnuolo’s squad must find ways to create turnovers, or they could be in for a long night.

A new week of games will keep fans occupied during the weekend. Early season jitters are normal, but elite teams eliminate mistakes early. Franchises that are successful this week will make strides towards a better season. Consecutive defeats could build negative habits – negating the work of an extensive off-season.
