4. Carolina Panthers, Baker Mayfield

The Carolina Panthers are playing with house money when it comes to for No. 1 overall pick, Baker Mayfield. They traded for him in place of Sam Darnold, who couldn’t recapture some of the early success he had last season. Unfortunately for Mayfield, it doesn’t appear he’s clicking with head coach Matt Rhule.

The former Baylor head coach is on the hot seat, so he’ll do anything to save his job. Baker would have to take a giant leap forward to keep his starting spot.

Christian McCaffrey is a backfield that features D’onta Freeman and Chubba Hubbard. The Panthers also have a good wide receiver room led by DJ Moore. If the season continues to spiral in a winnable NFC South, changes will be made. It will start with the quarterback. The playcalling isn’t going to help any quarterback succeed, but with PJ Walker on the roster, Rhule could turn to him for a spark. Walker showed flashes with his excellent athleticism and big arm.

Or they could turn back to Darnold if he thinks he could win now. Either way, there’s a chance the Panthers will play quarterback carousel in 2022 if Baker doesn’t make something happen.
