The Packers Need to Trade for a WR at the NFL trade deadline

Green Bay is on constant repeat each and every week. The first half of the game is not great, but the Packers seem to be somewhat competent. The second half is a completely different story. Over the last three weeks, the Packers’ offense has only been able to muster 14 points in the second half, and that includes being shut out completely in the second half against the Giants in week five.

There can be many reasons for this, but there is one thing that is obvious when watching the Packers – Aaron Rodgers does not trust anyone he throws to. It is not all the receivers’ fault either. Rodgers has been looking to get the ball out of his hands fast, and not allowing the play to develop. Sammy Watkins had two plays where the defenders focused on the drag route, allowing Watkins to run free down the field.

Rodgers was so quick to the flat, that he ignored a completely wide-open Watkins down the field. It even happened on the crucial missed fourth-down conversion late in the game when Rodgers went to Romeo Doubs on a flat route, missing Watkins for a big gain. People can defend Rodgers all they want, but until he allows plays to develop, this will continue to be an issue.

Nonetheless, the Packers still need a receiver that they can look to consistently. Chase Claypool has been a name in trade circles, but it looks like the Steelers will hold onto the 24-year-old receiver. Some names that could be intriguing for the Packers include Brandin Cooks, Jerry Jeudy, and D.J. Moore.

Cooks offers the most stability, but injury history and age could be a question mark for Green Bay.

Moore is one of the most talented wideouts in the league, but because of quarterback play, he has been unable to establish himself as one of the best in the league. Moore signed a three-year, $60 million extension in the offseason, but that contract does not come into play until next season. He is only a $6 million cap hit this season with a $1 million base salary, but will the Packers be willing to pay a receiver $20+ million starting next season? We have not seen Green Bay willing to do that.

The best option for potential and price tag-wise is Jerry Jeudy. The 23-year-old receiver is in the third year of his rookie deal, giving a team two more years of cheap pay. Jeudy has been unable to reach his potential because of quarterback play, and that was supposed to turn around this season with Russell Wilson. But, as everyone knows, Wilson has been the most disappointing acquisition this season. The Broncos are 2-5 and may be willing to move off an asset that they cannot afford to pay in the near future after giving extensions to Courtland Sutton and Tim Patrick. Jeudy still has great potential, and that could be unleashed with a quarterback like Rodgers.

The NFL trade deadline is Nov. 1 and Green Bay needs to make a move for a dependable weapon.
