Rich get richer as Chiefs acquire former first-round receiver in a trade
The Kansas City Chiefs saw what Tyreek Hill was asking on a new contract in the 2022 NFL offseason, traded him for picks, and they’ve since gone budget shopping at the wide receiver position. But it’s not like the Chiefs have been stingy about adding receivers, it’s more like they took the money they would have spent on just one player and they went to Costco and bought in bulk. The Chiefs have added yet another wide receiver before the 2022 NFL trade deadline, acquiring former New York Giants first-round pick Kadarius Toney.
Let’s have a quick check-in on the Chiefs’ offense, which is currently on a bye week, in the post-Tyreek Hill era, shall we?
Loaded Kansas City Chiefs offense adds Kadarius Toney to the mix
Chiefs offensive ranks in 2022:
- Points per game: 1st
- Total points: 1st
- First downs: 1st
- Passing touchdowns: 1st
- Passing yards: 2nd
- 3rd down %: 2nd
- Red Zone %: 2nd
The Chiefs’ offense remains a juggernaut, and yet they are still looking to add playmakers. Kadarius Toney fell out of favor with the New York Giants despite the fact that the team needs receiver help and despite the fact that he was a first-round pick just a year ago. Trade rumors involving Toney started months ago, and even at that time, the Chiefs were the team that made the most sense.
Toney’s skill set is basically tailor-made for Kansas City’s offense because he’s such a weapon in space and with the ball in his hands. The question now is — how will Kansas City do exactly that? While the concern over the offseason was over how the Cheifs would replace Tyreek Hill’s production, the concern has now shifted to making sure all these receivers get fed on a weekly basis. Not including the players that were already on the roster, the Chiefs have added:
- 2nd-round pick Skyy Moore
- Free agent JuJu Smith-Schuster
- Free agent Marquez Valdes-Scantling
Now, Kadarius Toney enters the mix. Coming out of Florida, Toney put himself in the first-round conversation with his blend of elite athletic traits and natural open-field playmaking ability. We saw him and Kyle Pitts absolutely wrecking defenses in their final year with the Gators, and ultimately, those two played a huge part in getting a pretty average (or worse) QB prospect like Kyle Trask drafted in round two.
The Chiefs understand one thing: The war on attrition in the NFL is real, and wide receiver is one of the game’s most valuable positions. Although they took a risk by letting Tyreek Hill go, the early proof of the way Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes elevate the guys around them is undeniable. It stands to reason that as long as Toney buys into the program, he could be a superstar in Kansas City.
