A disappointing regular season caused Denver’s front office to refocus. Their 4-12 record was tough to swallow- especially after pulling off a blockbuster trade. The Broncos received Russell Wilson in exchange for draft capital but failed to find success. No.3 struggled to become a leader in the locker room, causing disruptions for Nathaniel Hackett’s team.

Before the season began, many analysts believed Hackett’s offensive philosophy would complement Wilson’s play style. In 2021, the All-Pro gunslinger threw for 3,113 yards passing and 25 touchdowns. He limited turnovers and managed the offense well, but the Seahawks failed to clinch a playoff berth.

Russell Wilson’s first year as the Broncos Quarterback was rough

At the time, fans believed Seattle’s staff was the cause of an unsuccessful season. Their quarterback performed well, but the franchise remained at a standstill. Tensions between Head Coach Pete Carroll and his starting quarterback began to rise – insinuating an incoming divorce. It did not take long for trade rumors to rise to the surface – confirming Wilson’s desire to find greener pastures.

A trade between the Seahawks and Broncos sent Wilson to Mile High Stadium. Denver agreed to exchange six draft picks and four players for No.3(including two first-rounders in 2022 & 2023). Wilson signed a five-year $245 million contract, solidifying him as a Bronco for years to come.

Denver’s newest quarterback became too comfortable quickly. His team of coaches, physical therapist, and trainers set up shop inside the facility – sending mixed messages to the players and members of the staff.

Wilson’s decision to bring in his team of professionals rubbed teammates the wrong way. His actions did not exude the leadership qualities fans grew accustomed to seeing on the field during a 10-year stint with Seattle. Instead of working on team chemistry, Wilson spent time in his office. His time away from the team reflected on the field, causing the Broncos to miss out on clinching the playoffs.

Broncos QBs lack of leadership hurt the team in during the regular season

The lack of chemistry in the locker room resulted in an unproductive season. A loss to the Seahawks in Week 1 foreshadowed the winner of the offseason trade. Geno Smith outshined Wilson and led his squad to a 17-16 victory. Throughout the game, No.3 struggled to find the endzone. He completed one touchdown pass and completed 69% of his passes.

Weeks of low production cost the Broncos a plethora of games. Losses to the Raiders, Colts, Chargers, and Jets were consecutive – placing Denver at the bottom of the AFC West. A 21-17 win against the Jaguars stopped the bleeding, but could not save the season.

Another set of consecutive losses to the Titans, Raiders, Panthers, Ravens, and Chiefs put a dark cloud over the Broncos franchise. It became clear that their off-season transaction backfired – resulting in a 5-12 record. Wilson finished the regular season with a career-low in touchdown passes (16) and completion percentage (60.5). He also was sacked 55 times – the most times in his career.

A long regular season forced Denver’s front office to make immediate changes. On Dec 26, the Broncos decided to part ways with Head Coach Nathaniel Hackett – opening the position to experienced coaches throughout the league. It took a month for the Broncos to decide on their next leader of the locker room.

After interviews with Jim Caldwell, Ejiro Evero and Demeco Ryans, and other candidates, the Broncos announced their decision for the next man on the job. On Feb 3, the franchise declared its decision to hire Sean Payton to media outlets – a former Head Coach of the New Orleans Saints.

Broncos Hire Sean Payton to help create a winning atmosphere

Hiring Sean Payton was a great move, and Broncos fans are excited to see what the future holds. Their new Head Coach has a winning philosophy and is well-respected throughout the league. A win in Super Bowl XLIV added additional accolades to Payton’s notable career. He is 152-89 as a head coach (63%) and intends to continue his success with his new team.

The Broncos will be a different franchise before the 2023 regular season begins. Sean Payton will focus on eliminating distractions, including the ones surrounding his starting quarterback. Russell Wilson is a vital part of the Broncos’ future and will have to lead by example to have a successful season.

When asked about Russell Wilson’s entourage setting up camp in the team facility last season, Sean Payton confirmed it will remain a thing of the past. “That’s not going to take place here” replied Coach Payton – reassuring Denver fans that he would return cohesion and discipline to his new locker room. A new level of accountability will help No. 3 return to his glory – elevating Denver’s chances of competing for an NFL Championship.
