Don’t be surprised if these teams call on Carson Wentz

The last set of teams all had to have something happen if they were going to pick up the phone for Carson Wentz. Now we’re moving on to the teams that don’t need anything specific to happen but still might not need him. They aren’t the top candidates, but it wouldn’t come as a surprise if they decided to bring him in either.

The Chicago Bears saw Justin Fields take a massive step forward in 2022. He spent a heavy majority of the season running all over opposing defenses. While he has some work to do when it comes to his passing, there were positive steps forward there too (and maybe get him some actual receiving help outside of Darnell Mooney).

Fields has no backup though. Last season, the Bears were throwing Nathan Peterman out on the field. Wentz has his faults but he would be a massive improvement in that area. A solid veteran who can help Fields grow and be a reliable option should there be any injury issues.

The New England Patriots are in a weird boat. They got a great rookie season from Mac Jones in 2021. Then injuries slowed him down in 2022, and we saw the rise of rookie Bailey Zappe for a little bit. Jones got his starting job back, then got benched for Zappe, then started again. It was weird and felt like the team didn’t trust either 100%. And it led to Jones having a sophomore slump of a season.

It should still be his team. But the Patriots don’t seem nearly as “all-in” on Jones as they did heading into this time last year. Maybe getting a veteran QB “just in case” isn’t a bad idea.

Finally, we have the Las Vegas Raiders. Las Vegas has cut ties with quarterback Derek Carr. Could they be going after Rodgers or Jackson if they become available? Or will they look to the draft? If it’s the draft, they’re going to want a veteran quarterback. Let’s be honest. Bringing in Wentz after getting rid of Carr wouldn’t be the most popular move with the fanbase. But if the team is bringing in Carson Wentz it would likely be as a stop-gap for a rookie.
