3. The Houston Texans should sign CB Jonathan Jones in free agency

One offseason won’t be enough for the Houston Texans to address all their position needs but that doesn’t mean they should stay put and watch other teams get better in free agency. For one, their cornerback room could use a boost. They made Derek Stingley Jr. the third overall pick in last year’s draft but he missed time with injuries and wasn’t particularly great when he suited up, giving up a completion rate of 67.3 percent.

Stingley should be better in 2023 and Houston could use an early draft pick on a cornerback prospect in what’s poised to be one of the deepest classes in recent years. But the Texans will still need another cornerback and they could sign one in free agency.

James Bradberry is coming off a career season after signing a one-deal with the Philadelphia Eagles last offseason. He will be in demand in the open market and he’s made it known he wants to get paid a premium for his services. However, the Texans should pass on him and instead pursue Jonathan Jones, who was a key cog in the New England Patriots’ secondary last year.

After going undrafted in 2016, Jones signed with the Pats and progressively worked his way up on the depth chart. He started 16 games last season and gave up a 52.7 percent completion rate last year. The Former Auburn Tiger mostly lined up in the boundaries in 2022 but he played the majority of his snaps in the slot in previous years.

Jones’ flexibility to line up inside or outside would be a welcome addition to defensive coordinator Matt Burke’s scheme and the Texans wouldn’t need to invest an absurd amount of money to sign him.
