2. Improved Defense

The Chicago Bears have long been known for their dominant defense. That has not been the case lately, however. Poles made a considerable effort to improve the unit. He felt the defense was too weak up the middle so he went out and drafted three defensive tackles. He also added players like Andrew Billings, Rasheem Green, and DeMarcus Walker to solidify the defensive line. The Bears now have young, athletic players with high motors and that will make the line stronger. Yes, Poles still needs to acquire one more pass rusher. As OTAs and training camp inch closer, he will likely find someone who will fit into the system and help.

Poles also did a good job of solidifying the secondary. For the third time in four drafts, the Chicago Bears went for cornerbacks. Poles selected Tyrique Stevenson and Terell Smith. Both of them add size and toughness.

Where Poles made a big improvement was in the linebackers corps. He went out and signed free agents Tremaine Edmunds and TJ Edwards, two of the top linebackers in the league. He also drafted a linebacker. The unit now is now a very solid one that has playmakers who will make an impact.

The Bears should be able to apply more pressure on opposing quarterbacks, and shut down the run, things the defense was not able to do last season. The Bears’ defense could be a formidable force within the NFC North. Their defensive prowess provides a foundation that can disrupt opponents and create scoring opportunities for the offense.
