Washington Commanders running backs: No. 3 Chris Rodriguez Jr.

As mentioned at the beginning of the article, the Commanders took Chris Rodriguez Jr. in the sixth round of this past draft. With that type of draft position, some might think he might be below veteran Jonathan Williams on the depth chart.

However, early on Rodriguez Jr. has been getting high praise from head coach Ron Rivera, via Nathaniel Marrero of Sports Illustrated.

"“He’s got good physical size…He moves well for a big guy. He’s got good hands, a lot better than anticipated. He has a stick his foot in the ground and making one cut type back.”"

The rookie’s college stats should back the high praise from Rivera. In five seasons, Rodriguez Jr. totaled 3,643 yards rushing on 592 rushes and 33 rushing touchdowns. The one area the rookie needs to improve upon is his pass-catching skills. He only had 20 catches for 120 yards and three receiving touchdowns as well.

Now Rodriguez Jr. might not start out as the third back on the depth chart, but over time he should be able to make claim to that role. He has all the tools to be a solid running back in the NFL moving forward. He just needs time and development.

Moving forward the Washington Commanders have a strong depth chart at the running back position that shouldn’t be taken for granted.
