Quarterback Shuffle: 3 passers who could be on the move in ’24
Quarterback Shuffle: 3 passers who could be on the move in ’24
Kyler Murray, Arizona Cardinals
What is the argument for the Arizona Cardinals keeping Kyler Murray if they are bad enough to earn the #1 pick in the 2024 NFL Draft? They’d have a chance to select Caleb Williams, who is already drawing legitimate comparisons to Patrick Mahomes.
Plus, if the Houston Texans are not very good, the Cardinals may have two very high first-round picks, as they own the Texans’ in 2024. I love Kyler Murray; I think he’s one of the few true dual-threat quarterbacks in the NFL, but I don’t think he’s on stable ground with the Cardinals.
The organization seemed to reluctantly give him this monster contract extension, and with a torn ACL and a new regime in town, he looks like a quarterback that could be move at the end of the season. There honestly seems like a chance that Murray doesn’t even take a snap for them this year if the team is bad enough when Murray is healthy to return.
Their best course of action might be to trade Murray, get some draft picks and cap relief, and reset their quarterback situation with Caleb Williams. That might align more with their rebuilding process than sticking with Murray, who also comes with concerns about his commitment to the game itself.
Murray would surely have a ton of suitors, I think, so I don’t think Arizona would have much troubles trading him. This would be a significant move, especially considering Kyler Murray is still very young and still may have another 7-10 years of franchise quarterback play in the NFL.
